As part of National Bison Day festivities, come see what Illinois’ tallgrass prairie looked like when bison roamed it! Join the Wetlands Initiative in exploring an area at Midewin called South Patrol Road Prairie, which we previously restored in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service. A family-friendly guided hike with TWI’s Trevor Edmonson will include stops to harvest native seed for planting in other areas of Midewin currently under restoration.
There will be two chances to take this 1.5-hour hike on National Bison Day: The first one starts at 10:00 in the morning and the second one starts at noon.
Meet in the parking lot past the River Road Seedbeds at Midewin. To get to the lot from Highway 53, head west on River Road for two miles and then turn north on the gravel road and follow it about a half mile to the parking lot. We’ll see you there!
This hike and other activities on National Bison Day at Midewin are part of a statewide Bison Crawl. For more information on the many events that day throughout Illinois, click here.
Please email us if you plan to attend TWI’s “time travel” prairie hike.
